Web 5.0: The extension of web functionality. | by Aransiola Leom Ayodele | Coinmons | June 2022
Web 5.0 is a decentralized web platform that allows developers to develop decentralized web applications (DWAs) using decentralized identifiers (DIDs), verifiable credentials (VCs), and decentralized web nodes ( DWN), regaining ownership and control of user identity and data. It will be built on Bitcoin.
Before going any further, I wrote about getting started with Web 3.0. The article will give you a brief recap of the evolution of the web and what Web 3.0 has to offer.
I would have liked to talk briefly about web 4.0 which is still a work in progress, it is called “the symbiotic web”, but web 5.0 (the intelligent and emotional web) has arrived earlier than expected in the news. 🤞🤞
According to Jack Dorsey, the main goal of web 5.0 is to give users full control over their data. Additionally, users can control how their data interacts with and how it will be used on the Internet.
Interesting, right? 🤔🤔
deep dive
Web 5.0 is an evolution of the web that enables decentralized applications and protocols.
Currently, Internet users are still murmuring about not having full control over their data and their identity, their use and the security aspect which is always very worrying in web 3.0; web 5.0 promises to give complete control over data and identity to users as this information will be stored with the users.
Pillars of Web 5.0
- DID
did://
: This self-owned identification allows decentralized authentication and identity routing. - Verifiable Credentials (VC): data formats and strategy for presenting and verifying assertions cryptographically.
- Decentralized Web Nodes (DWN): It manages data storage and message relay nodes. It therefore serves as the backbone of decentralized applications and protocols.
DIDs are self-generated and self-owned. It has no centralized provider or authority. It resists prohibition and it is universally discoverable.
DWNs are universally addressable and secure. DWNs can be encrypted with DID keys. Also, DWNs support asynchronous message threads.
Anatomy of a web 5.0 identity wallet
- Data Management: It has a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and management capability DWN credentials and application data.
- Identification function: signing, verifying, discovering and presenting identification information to verifying parties.
- It performs authentication and manages authentication — “DID auth”.
- It supports creating, updating and updating DID across all supported DID methods.
It maintains and applies what DID are used with different people, applications or services.
The evolution of DWA from PWA
Described simply, a Progressive Web App (PWA) is a website that has all the functionality of an app. PWAs allow you to create a more trustworthy and engaging version of your website. PWAs can do almost everything native apps do, including working offline, accessing your camera and microphone if needed, and using GPS.
While a Decentralized Web Application (DWA) is a revolutionary web application model which is much more secure. DWA has its protocols and data encrypted and sorted on a blockchain, unlike web applications.

Interesting Part of Web 5.0 – Fun Facts
- When DID and DWN are used together, they create a network of DID– Secure messaging, data storage, and credential sharing that can replace single protocols with universal standards for all kinds of semantic data transmissions.
- In today’s world, many actions require the establishment of a relationship of trust between the parties. Individuals, organizations and businesses can use DIDthe sand DWN to broadcast credentials that anyone can independently find and verify.
- When you need data from your collection across multiple platforms, you won’t have to re-enter it. You can give these platforms access to your saved data, such as travel reservations, music playlists, bank account information, etc.
Conclusion
The goal of Web 1.0 was to connect documents (resources) and establish network access. Then there is Web 2.0, which is an environment where users contribute value (to websites). Likewise, web 3.0 allows you to create, own and be able to identify your data on the web. Web 4.0, on the other hand, is still a work in progress, it is called “the symbiotic web”. Finally, web 5.0 is an emotional sensory region that gives users full control over their data. Additionally, users can control how their data interacts with and how it will be used on the Internet.
We know that other human technology exploration capabilities are still in progress, we are waiting for the amazing development and we hope it will make our daily life easier and bring us more security.
